The One Essential Trait Every Wedding Vendor Needs

May 15, 2024

Booking wedding vendors is no easy task. More specifically, finding the right weddings vendors for you is no easy task. From budget concerns to making sure everyone shows up on time, it can be stressful to find the right team for your big day.

In this blog post, we'll reveal what essential trait you should look for in any vendor.

1. It's Not What It Seems

So, you made it. The day is finally here! The flowers are assembled and setup around the altar, your makeup artist is ready to turn you into the Next Top Model, and your photographer just showed up with her second shooter ready to make sure you feel like a million bucks. But, there's a problem. Neither the makeup artist, florist, or photographer greeted you and asked you how're you're doing. Throughout the day you notice they're extremely proficient at what they do; they're fast, efficient, know all the lingo, but they've refused to connect with you on a personal level or make an effort to calm your nerves and let you know they're you're biggest supporter. You and your soon-to-be husband feel awkward, unsure of how to bring up your concern, and figure the best course of action is to stay quiet and 'let the professionals work.' At the end of the night you realize the day has run smoothly without any hiccups, but you still feel as though something was missing.

A few weeks after your wedding you receive your photo gallery. The photos are stunning, but you notice that in most of your portraits, you're using your 'fake' smile. Immediately you're reminded of that awkwardness you felt throughout the day. Then you see another photo using that same smile, but this time it's during couple's portraits when you're asked by the photographer to pose for a picture you explicitly asked them not to capture. Then you see another with the same smile, and another, and another.

This is a completely hypothetical scenario, but sadly, not an unrealistic one. Some may think this is the best case scenario! However, the essential trait all three vendors were missing in this story was empathy.

2. The Hard Truth

For most people, the realty is you're not always going to have the the budget to book any vendor of your choosing. But, you do have the ability to find vendors who's day-of values align with yours.

It's our belief that good wedding vendors must have expert-level technical know-how, but great wedding vendors must carry empathetic hearts and adept people skills. Take it from someone who's married to a wedding planner; having a killer vendor team on your big day is one of, if not the most important things you can do to ensure your day is everything you've dreamed of. The final result is something you'll remember and cherish for decades to come, but you'll also remember how you felt and what kind of experience you had; it's two sides of the same coin. No matter how well or how poorly a vendor does their job, it's always to the benefit or expense of the couple, so choose wisely!

3. Where To Go From Here

Like I mentioned earlier, the majority of brides who begin the planning process are restricted by their budget. But, that just means the majority of you will have to dig a little deeper when you begin your search for the dream team. Here's a list of things to look for when researching wedding vendors. This list is not exhaustive, but it should get you going in the right direction.

  1. If the vendor has a website, read their about page, read reviews, and ask around. Statistically, the 'about' page on websites is the most visited…this is no accident! Remember, we want you to buy into a vendor because you think they'd be a good fit for you, not only because they do the best work. They may be the best fit based on their company's values, but do mediocre work. Conversely, they may mention little to nothing about their values but do outstanding work. It's up to you to decide which side of the coin carries the most weight. Ideally, you want to find vendors with day-of values that align with yours, and that do incredible work!

  2. If you can't find local vendors that match what you're looking for, look elsewhere! We're all about supporting local professionals in the wedding industry, but the reality is you may need to look to a nearby area for the right person. At our wedding, we hired an out-of-state video team because we weren't able to nail down the right one in-state that fit our budget and style. Again, it's about finding the right people for your day. Don't settle!

  3. Lastly, as stressful as planning a wedding can be, it's important to bring people around you who are there to support, love, and help you along the way. Whether you have a full-service planner, month-of coordinator, or your friend's mom as the day-of coordinator, planning a wedding takes a village. For the 4-9 months it takes the plan a wedding, why not have your favorite people with you to help and support you?
